Twitter narrows TweetDeck AIR and mobile app shutdowns to May 7th

image

Twitter has been warning for weeks that it would shut down TweetDeck’s AIR and mobile apps sometime in early May, but it didn’t say exactly when loyalists would finally have to move on. The company now has a firm date: May 7th. In just over two weeks, Twitter will both pull the apps from their respective stores and stop existing installs from working as the service’s version 1.0 API rides into the sunset. While the persisting native and web-based desktop apps will lessen some of the sting, we’d suggest that you pay your last respects if you have fond memories of TweetDeck’s early apps.

Allegedly, when Michael Crichton passed away, he has completed approximately one-third of what has become “Micro”, as well as notes and files. The estate retained Richard Preston to complete “Micro”. The outcome is a pretty good techno-thriller, but is definitely not a Michael Crichton work.

Like most of Crichton’s work, “Micro” wants to blend contemporary events and science with more than a dash of scientific fantasy to produce an unexpected – and terrifying – outcome, such as the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park”.

In “Micro”, seven graduate science students at Harvard are courted by a glad-handing entrepreneur, Vin Drake, to come interview for jobs with Nani gen Micro Technologies. The need for them is immediate and the seven are expected to put their studies aside to visit Nani gen in Hawaii and tour their facilities.

Eric Jansen, the brother of Peter, one of the students, is a Vice President at Nani gen. Peter receives a mysterious text message from Eric, saying only “don’t come”. Peter has also just received word that his brother Eric is missing and presumed dead after a boating accident.

Peter is suspicious, but doesn’t convey his suspicions to the others or the police. The police are occupied in a mild way with what they presume are the suicides of three men who are found slashed to death.

The story moves quickly to the point where we learn that Nani gen shrinks people and things to microscopic size and sends them into the rain forest to search out new ingredients for drugs and other commercial uses.

Vin Drake, it turns out, is not a nice person – the seven students are soon shrunk to a half-inch high and set loose in the rain forest where they are expected to die within a few days.

I won’t go into more detail in order to avoid spoilers. The book stands on its own, just don’t expect it to read like Michael Crichton.

The plot has lots of holes and depends on science, real and imaginary, to keep the reader interested. Character development is weak. The storyline becomes increasingly forced as the novel heads toward a conclusion.

I think the Crichton estate has made an error here and diluted the reputation of Michael Crichton. This doesn’t have the feel of a Crichton novel. It appears this posthumous effort was intended to exploit the Crichton name for money. It would never sell as well under the solo name of Richard Preston.

It isn’t an awful book by any stretch. It simply isn’t what it pretends to be, a Michael Crichton novel.

Facebook Is Being Sued By a Dead Man

image

Dutch programmer Joannes Jozef Everardus van Der Meer is suing Facebook over its ‘Like’ button. Companies get sued all the time! Why do we care? Well, aside from having an A+ name, van Der Meer is actually… dead. He passed away in 2004, just as Facebook was beginning to take over the world. Why is he suing now?

Van Der Meer was the founder of Surfbook, a social diary-type service where people could share stuff with friends and like things with a ‘like’ button. If that sounds a heckuva lot like some other site with book in its name, well, you know why lawsuits are being tossed around. The lawsuit claims that Facebook “bears a remarkable resemblance, both in terms of its functionality and technical implementation, to the personal web page diary that Van Der Meer had invented years earlier.”

Van Der Meer was awarded patents in 1998 for Surfbook, patents that presumably include the Like button. But Van Der Meer is dead so why does he care about lawsuits? Well, Rembrandt Social Media, a patent-holding company, is the one that’ll be doing the suing but Van Der Meer’s widow and his colleagues will testify in the trial about the importance of his invention. Some times, people want credit for their work. And other times, patent holding companies want money for those people’s work. Even when they’re dead.

I’m a waiter and found this funny. All tho, I would be rather upset

An Applebee’s waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.

receipt-pastor-lg

Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch’s manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee’s that the ensuing firestorm had “ruined” her reputation.

“I give God 10%,” Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic “0″ where the additional tip would be. “Why do you get 18?” (There were more than eight people in Bell’s party, triggering the auto-tip.)

Welch, who snapped a photo of the bill from a fellow server and uploaded to Reddit, defended her right to post the receipt. “I thought the note was insulting, but also comical,” she told Consumerist.com. “And I thought other users would find it entertaining.”

Bell, a pastor at Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries Church, was not amused, and she called Welch’s manager to complain.

“[It was] a lapse in my character and judgment,” Bell told the Smoking Gun, adding she did not expect her easily recognizable signature would be, as her friend informed her, “all over Yahoo. You went viral!”

“My heart is really broken,” Bell added. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”

A spokesman for Applebee’s said it apologized to Bell for violating her “right to privacy” and confirmed that Welch “is no longer employed by the franchise.”

Welch was surprised that Applebee’s fired her, “especially because there was nothing specific in the employee handbook admonishing this behavior.”

“I had no intention of starting a witch hunt or hurting anyone. I just wanted to share a picture I found interesting,” she said. “I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty and blistered on a good day. And after all that, I can be fired for ‘embarrassing’ someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”

Welch also isn’t buying Bell’s embarrassment. “If this person wrote the note, obviously they wanted it seen by someone,” she said. “I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man used as reasoning.”

Adventures in Single Parenting

Where to start…? For the past year or so I’ve been keeping a log of the day-to-day life of myself and my kids. I’ve also been keeping a medical log as well, mostly for my son seeing how he has the most of the problems. The reason for all the record keeping was caused by me and my ex-wife getting a divorce about a year ago…. As it stands I have the kids 90% of the time. She moved out.. I don’t know why I’m writing about this now. I think it was caused by reading everything that I wrote in the logs.
I know I made a post when everything went down on Facebook and I also stated that I wouldn’t talk about it again.. But there are so many things digging at me.. The drama, games, the lack of respect. Here is the post I made on Facebook:

“End of a Chapter. Starting a new one
by Jason Roberts on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 12:16am ·

I’ve been thinking a lot about this for the past month or two now. For those who knows both me and Laurel personally, know that we have been, having a great deal of trouble in our marriage.

For the past month now we both came to the point where things are just not working out anymore. We have parted ways and moved on to other things.

We are both working together to make sure the kids are happy in all this and that there is NO bad blood between us both. I know it’s never easy and also sad. But in the long run it’s for the best I think. We are just on to different levels and have different ideas for what we want out of life.

Now this is something that just didn’t happen over night. No this has been going on from Oct. 2011 to now. We’ve try to work things out. But it wasn’t till these last 2 months is where we both realized that things were just never going to be the same or get better. Again there is no bad blood, no “he said, she said.” going on. We are both living our lives and making sure that the kids are happy , health, and that they have everything they need in life. After all.. That is what is important, the kids.

It feels nice to talk about this finally. We’ve been keeping a lot of this under raps for so long, worry on what people may think. Are we going to lose friends? Lose family? Be everyone seems to be working with us to make sure everyone is happy and working together.

We both are see other people and living our lives the way we see fit. No more, no less. This is the last and only time I will ever write about this. The fact is that this is a personal matter. But all of our friends are on here and this is just an easier way to inform everyone that needs to know.”

The truth of the matter is I tried to make it work.. THREE times I’ve tried to make things work out. Whats odd is, I’ve always said if someone cheated on me I was out. Gone.. But for some reason that just eludes me to why I tried to make things work. Maybe it was for the kids? I don’t know….. As time goes on my attention is on the kids. They have become my life and I will do anything for them. I want them to be happy and health. I’m just tired of  walking on egg shells so to speak.

I’m the one doing everything for them. School, meetings with teachers, Doctor appointments, helping with homework. I make sure they have clean cloths and 3 meals a day. Oh sure she takes them every so often. For the past month it’s been Tuesdays and Saturdays only for a few hours. But there have been a few times where I get a text or phone call stating that she is “tired” or not “feeling good” OR my favorite is ” can you come and get them? They won’t listen to anything I say.”

I’m sorry… But that’s not how this works. You’re the parent, the Mother… I just don’t get it really, it’s like they come off as a chore. Also what kills me is when I get texts late at night asking if I’m unhappy having the kids all the time? Followed up with a lame attempted of saying sorry for making a mess of my life.

No… I’m done being nice, I tired of the games and drama. Tired of waiting for someone’s mind to make decision and/or keep a promise. These kids are my life, the air I breath. They make me complete and happy where I am no made what. I love seeing their little faces in the morning and telling me what they had dreams about. How they slept and what they want for breakfast. I mean yeah it lonely not having another adult around to talk to. But I figured a relationship or what have you will happen in its own time. I just hope they are okay with kids HA-HA! I’ll tell you this tho… If I ever do get married again, that’s it! I want someone to talk to me about the problems when they have them. Not just sit there and do nothing. Like I said in that post:

“We are just on to different levels and have different ideas for what we want out of life.”

The Facebook Cheat Sheet Shows All the Keyboard Shortcuts to Use Facebook Faster

image

Save some time (while wasting time) on Facebook with handy keyboard shortcuts for quickly getting around the social networking site, finding conversations, and composing messages. This Facebook Cheat Sheet offers up all the shortcuts plus a guide to emoticons.

Most of the basic shortcuts use Alt+ a number, as we’ve noted previously. Other shortcuts that we haven’t seen before include Alt+q to show or hide the keyboard shortcuts available and Alt+c to start a new message.

Note that the shortcuts work differently in specific browsers. As My Clever Agency instructs us, use these combinations:

Windows
Firefox: Shift + Alt + #
Chrome: Alt + #

Mac
Firefox : Control + #
Chrome: Control + Option + #
Safari: Control + Option + #

My favorite not on here is the “L” shortcut to like a photo in a post.

Here’s the full cheat sheet (click to expand or right-click to save)

A Sad Woman Lost Her Entire Life Savings in the Facebook IPO and Now Wants Her Money Back

A lot of average joes put on their faux-finance cap during the Facebook IPO and hoped it would get them rich. Everyone uses Facebook therefore everyone wants to buy Facebook stock, the logic went. Yeah, it didn’t work out that way. I’m sure a lot of people lost money. One poor woman, Uma Swaminathan, lost her entire life savings and kinda wants a re-do.

Uma Swaminathan, who’s a retired teacher and a widow, is trying to get restitution on the money she lost during the Facebook IPO. She had ordered her broker, Vanguard, to buy 6,200 shares of Facebook but then she changed her mind when Facebook didn’t begin trading as expected. Vanguard supposedly didn’t cancel in time and now she’s lost a good chunk of change.

Furthermore, Swaminathan has beef with Morgan Stanley too. According to Reuters:

Morgan Stanley, she said, “informed their own privileged clients” that it was downgrading its outlook on the stock, just before the IPO, and then issued more shares while raising the price “just to suck more suckers into the stock,” according to her FINRA complaint filed in July.

I’m pretty sure once the money is gone, the money is gone but Swaminathan wants $1.9 million in damages. Good luck?
