Star Trek Book Challenge 17: Vendetta (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

217911The Borg and Captain Picard, how can you go wrong!? Let me start by saying this.. Thank God I picked up this book to read next. A lot of these Star Trek novels are so painful to get through. Oh should there are a few winners, but the number losers out weights them sadly. But Vendetta is making up for a lot of them :). So for this challenge I’m reading Vendetta (Star Trek: The Next Generation) by Peter David, now to let you know that Vendetta is a sequel for I guess you would say the events of “The Doomsday Machine”. Which is an episode for the original series of Star Trek and the episodes for “The Best of Both Worlds” Parts 1 & 2, from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Vendetta The Borg — half organic being and half machine, they are the most feared race in the known galaxy. In their relentless quest for technological perfection, they have destroyed entire star systems, enslaved countless peoples, and, in a single brutal attack, decimated Starfleet’s mightiest vessels. Only a final desperate gambit by Captain Picard and the “U.S.S. Enterprise(TM) ” crew stopped the Borg from conquering the entire Federation. And now they have returned. VENDETTA

In the bestselling tradition of “Metamorphosis” and “The Lost Years,” here is the newest Star Trek (R) Giant Novel, a story of vengeance and obsession.

Answering a distress call from a planet under attack by the Borg, the U.S.S. Enterprise crew meets Delcara, the lone survivor of an alien race the Borg obliterated. Blinded by hatred, Delcara seeks the ultimate revenge — the complete destruction of her race’s executioners. But the U.S.S. Enterprise crew learns that Delcara’s vengeance carries a terrible price, for once unleashed, the destructive force she commands will annihilate not only the Borg, but countess innocents as well…

I love this book and Peter David does a great job at using all the characters from the show. Even if it only for the basic of needs. The story line great and moves right along, I think if there was an issues with this book. I would have to say it would be the use and how Data comes off. But other than that I rather enjoyed this book from start to finish.

So if you fine to to read this, I say go for it. BUT! If you are to watch or read “The Doomsday Machine”,  “The Best of Both Worlds” Parts 1 & 2, I say do that first. But I don’t think it is a requirement to do so.

  1. There’s some really good stuff here, but man, it’s slow. It feels padded to me, an attempt to strech out what was perhaps a slightly overlong novel into a “Giant Novel”.

David was one of my favorite Pocket novelists at this time though, I followed him here form the DC comics series he was writing. His sense of humor and style is evidant here, and it makes the book work for the most part.

      1. late 80’s and 90’s. He started around issue 48 or so of the first run until it was cancelled (they wanted to restart teh series with better paper a new #1 and a higher price), then stayed on after the restart (around Star Trek 5) until he was replaced by Howard Weinstein about a year and a half later. He also wrote the excellent “Modala Imperitive” which was two mini-series, one TOS and one TNG. almost all of his work on Star Trek for DC has been collected in trades I believe.
