Star Trek Book Challenge 43: The Pandora Principle (Star Trek: The Original Series #49)

spockA Romulan Bird of Prey mysteriously drifts over the neutral zone and into Federation territory. Captain Kirk and the crew of the “Enterprise investigate, only to find the ship dead in space. When Starfleet orders the derelict ship brought to Earth for examination, the “Enterprise returns home with perhaps her greatest prize. But the Bird of Prey carries a dangerous cargo, a deadly force that is soon unleashed in the heart of the Federation. Suddenly, the only hope for the Federation’s survival lies buried in the tortured memory of Commander Spock’s protege, a cadet named Saavik. Together, Spock and Saavik must return to the nightmare world of Saavik’s birth — a planet called Hellguard, to discover the secret behind the Romulans’ most deadly threat of all…

The Pandora Principle (Star Trek: The Original Series #49) by Carolyn Clowes.. There is something to be said bout the TOS. The writing is great, lots and lots of character development for Spock & Savek. The novel is rather fast-paced and having a “multi-layered” origin story is fantastic.  The only problem I found and it’s a small one.. Some of it was rather typical Star Trek story lines.. But it’s not heavy in the book.

Family Time At Wizard World

20160220_103622Again if you follow my Twitter and or Facebook you would have seen the many picture of my Hobbits and of me  with my better half ;). So aside from doing all my press work at the Comic Con, I made sure to spend just the same amount of time with them. This was my Hobbits first Comic Con and boy were they taken back haha. Both of them running back and forth trying to find the heroes or villains they want to meet. Jackson would get so pumped up about meeting one and then get SUPER nervous haha.

“Look Joker and Quinn!”

“Okay! Go ask them for a picture or say hello.”

That’s all I heard most of the day haha. We did get some really good picture of them tho and they powered through the whole Con, from beginning to end. We were all tired and our feet were killing us…. Plus we still had to IMG_20160221_124302drive back home haha. But It did make for some great memories and the kids in a state of wonder :). Like I wrote about in my other post called “A Small Conversation With William Shatner & Bob Camp At Wizard World“, they were able to meet William Shatner. As well as some of the artist in the area. Lilly Got to meet her Disney princesses and Wonder Woman, Jackson got to meet Darth Vader and The Doctor. Plus a number of zombies haha. The cosplayers were in the area were so nice to them and again the staff was great.

We did try and set through a few Q&A panels, but you know who that goes :). They did really well, no yelling or moving around to much. But when you don’t know the topic to well things get a little hard to set through. But over all I think they did really well and I can tell they had a lot of fun.

Till then so long, and thanks for all the fish!

My Thoughts On Wizard World Portland

WWCC20160220_092746.jpgSo if you been following my Twitter, you know I’ve posted a lot of updates and pictures of Wizard World this past weekend and still are posting things about it haha. I was lucky enough to bring my family with me, but I was thinking about making another personal post about our family adventures at Comic Con. I wanted to focus more on the press side of things on this post.

IMG_20160221_123633The lay out was rather different this year. At first I wasn’t too sure I liked it. But it flowed rather well! When you first walk into the area you have all the exhibitors; SO MANY EXHIBITORS! A lot of cool stuff to be had and alsoIMG_20160221_123049 a lot of random treasures. Now behind that you have the autograph area and photo ops. Moving to your right you’ll find the Artist Alley which is beyond cool. Then They did something a little new this year or at least new to me.. They had a gaming event area, filled with new video games and TableTop. They also had a land area for tournament gaming by Bandai Namco and some esports area. I thought everything was very well organized and everything flowed smoothly. The only problem I had was some of the panels I wanted to go to overlapped each other or I was only given a few minutes to get there in time. But that happens at every Con haha, I don’t think that will change anytime soon.

received_10154144866981996The staff was super nice and answered every question you can throw at them. The only down side I had, small as it may be; I ran into Billy Mitchell who is best known for recording high scores on classic games from the golden age of arcade video games. I kinda knew he was a “jerk” at times (I’m putting that nicely). But I walked up and asked him how he was doing and then asked if I could interview him. He didn’t even look at me, just rolled his eyes and said, “right…” and kept walking past me. Okay.. Whatever that means hahaha. I really didn’t expected much from him, but I didn’t expected that. So moving along from that useless drama haha.

received_10154144866916996There were a lot of cosplayers and all were super nice and willing to answer any questions you have. One of them was dressed up as Neelix from Star Trek Voyager, sadly I forgot this guys name. received_10154144866971996But he was apart of the Star Trek Fan of the NW group and panel called “Let’s talk about the next Star Trek series”. Super nice guy! He spent over 2 hours in make-up for the Neelix cosplay and it’s been a work of love for himself. Later he told me that he was planing on going to Vegas for a Star Trek Con received_10154144866951996there. The Panel that himself and others put on was rather interesting. It was cool to sit back and hear everyone talk about what they would like to see in the new series. Like do we want a ship or no ship? Enterprise or another ship? Even a different time period for the show to take place. They even went as far as talking about plot ideas, planets, space stations, actors, etc. I got a lot of this panel recorded for my podcasts and will share that with you very soon.

Weta Workshop was also at the Con. this year. They had so many props and make-up effects, even had a part where you can get make-up put on you, but everything they had was amazing. Founded in 1987 by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger as RT Effects, Weta Workshop has produced creatures and makeup effects for the TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and20160220_150807 Xena: Warrior Princess and effects for films such as Meet the Feebles and Heavenly Creatures. A digital division, Weta Digital, was formed in 1993. Weta Workshop’s output came to worldwide prominence with director Peter Jackson’s film trilogy The Lord of the Rings, producing sets, costumes, armor, weapons, creatures and miniatures. It supported the creation of Reclaiming the Blade (2009), a documentary film on stage combat, historical European and Asian swordsmanship. So that should give you an idea on they are about..

They also had a Star Wars Fan Panel: “There has been an awakening… can you feel it? The future of fandom has irrevocably been changed with the release of The Force Awakens. Join professional nerds as we discuss 4 decades of Star Wars, challenge the audience inreceived_10154144867106996 trivia, and speculation on what the future of the Star Wars universe. Hosted by Tony Kim (” Who is a great blogger that I follow and sadly I didn’t get a chance to meet him. The panel was great and fun to be apart of.

I got to meet so many great people and interview a number of them before hand as well. I can’t wait till next year and really get into it :). If you happen to get the chance to go to Wizard World at any point, Do so! People there are super nice and easy to work with. A lot more organized than the first year they did this, a lot of hard work and love went into this event and it shows. The next post will have links to the podcasts with the interviews & panels that I was apart of.

A Small Conversation With William Shatner & Bob Camp At Wizard World

WWCCI know in past posts and a handful of podcasts, I have shared the story of my Dad meeting William Shatner, DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy. Then my Dad giving me his pictures and autographs and then to have them 14154755-standardtaken by someone. I found the post if you care to read it, I wrote this when Leonard Nimoy passed away ( So it’s been a mission for me to get replacement autographs for the last couple of years now and with Wizard World Comic Con this year, that became possible! Walking up to the table to buy a ticket to get Shatner’s autograph, not a problem…. Walking up to pick out a picture… Okay don’t panic, doing okay….. Now walking up to Shatner himself… OH MY GOD *screaming on the inside*.

Shatner: Hi! How are you?

Both myself and my wife answered: Fine.

Shanter looks down at the picture: For Carly and Jason… You are Carly (pointing at my wife)?

Carly: Yes

Shatner: You are Jason (pointing at me)?

Me: Yes (laughing a little bit)

Shatner: Then who are these two (pointing at both my kids)?

Carly: These are our hobbits.

Me: That’s Lilly and Jackson.

Shatner: Well hello there!! How are you two?

(Kids look wide eyed and not sure on what to say. Hahha!) Okay…. (Lilly with a smile)

At this point I knew I didn’t have much time talk with Shatner. So I gave him a cliff notes version of my story about him meeting my Grandpa and my Dad while filming TOS – S03E03 – The Paradise Syndrome.

Shatner: Oh yeah! (looking at me while I tell this story.)

Quickly going into detail and the point of the story. On how my Dad then gave them to me and were stolen later on. The only one I had left was Deforest Kelly.

Shatner with him mouth dropping open: My God. I’m sorry to hear that.

Me: Yeah, thank you! So with new autograph from you. This will complete the set. Well almost.. I have half of Leonard.

Shatner: Well that’s good you’ll be able to get the three together then (rather wide eye and smile).

Me: Indeed. Now you have meet 4 generations of this family (Grandpa, Dad, myself and my son).

Shatner: (With a raised eyebrow) Oh….. (realizing how old he was.)

Me: (In the back of my mind. Great! You just called Shatner old… Great…) Thank you so much for letting me tell you about this and letting us meet with you.

Shatner: Not a problem! Enjoy the rest of your day! (as he waves bye at the kids with a smile.)

I know it’s not a interview or a juice story full of details. But it’s an important personal story/mission that I’ve been working on for the last couple of years and I’m happy that it’s coming to a close :). In those 5 minutes I had a lot of weight taken off my shoulders and super happy. I was happy that my kids were able to meet Shatner and I know one day I’ll pass along those autographs to them as my Dad to me. It’s the memories and the stories that come with these chance encounters. It’s not about the money. So thank you so much Mister William Shatner!!

So after trying to cool down a bit, we walked over to Bob Camp’s table. For those who don’t know who Bob Camp is, he is a animator, cartoonist, comic book artist, director, and producer. I’ve always been a big fan of his work and style of humor. After walking up there I picked out a drawing he did of the The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen.

Camp: Did you like this episode?

Me: Oh yeah! I love Ren and Stimpy, but this one was in my top five.

Camp: Mind if I share a story with you about this?

Me: Sure! Yes please.

Camp: So while coming up with ideas of this episode. We had a lot of guys in Canada working on this. We kinda gave them freedom to do whatever they want and then they will send it back to us. Now there is a scene where they are all cheering in the cartoon and throwing their hats into the air. Well one of them put in some intestines and what would be a cigar looking bit come flying out of it. Now back then things like that were getting cut left and right. But once we saw this we were all laughing. Later I asked the producer if she liked it? She said she thought it was funny and gave it a green light.

Me: Really?!?

Camp: Yeah. Then come to realize she wasn’t even looking at the screen half the time.. That’s how we got away with so much stuff like that.

Camp’s wife: Tell him what happened 30 years later.

Me: Oh? What happened?

Camp: Well on the 30 anniversary of the show, we released a set with all the cuts plus some bonus clips. But one of the reps was shocked that was given a okay. The producer later told me that she saw it and gave the okay anyways. I still doubt that this was true, I just think she was just trying to cover her butt hahaha.

Me: Hahaha wow. Yeah I remember a lot of that as a kid and was amazed on how you guys were pushing the limits on everything. My Dad got me hooked on this show and also grow up on Tex Avery & Chuck Jones. I started mimicking your art style to find my own, because I loved it so much.

Camp: How do you think me and guys like John K. got started? Haha we copied the crap out of those guys as well. I remember starting out in some little film festival in Ojai, CA.-

Me: Wait..? Your from Ojai?

Camp: Yes..?

Me: That’s my home town! I was born there!

Camp: Really? that’s nuts. What a small world hahah!

Me: Do you know Eric Pigors? He worked with Disney and created ToxicToons.

Camp: Yes! I know Eric! How do you know him?

Me: I did a art show a few years back and he was there and then we met at a Horror Con. From there we just hit it off and met his wife and got a tour of his house haha.

Camp: I bet it’s filled with Halloween crap.

Me: Oh yeah! That and art everywhere.

Camp: You know he almost died not that long ago?

Me: Yeah I remember reading the post his wife made on Facebook. I haven’t heard anything else after that tho.

Camp: Oh yeah. Scary stuff. He had a major heart attack at home. I know he is doing better now. Super nice guy!

Me: Oh wow! Yeah he is. Would hate to lose him.

Camp: Off topic.. Have we sang the The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen anthem at all today?

Camp’s Wife: No we have not haha.

Camp: Do you remember the words to the song?

Me: Most of them I do haha.

Both me and Bob Camp stood there in the middle of Wizard World comic con, started singing The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen anthem… Yeah that so happened! Never in a million year did I think something like that would ever happen hahaha!! If you don’t remember the song here is it:

This was one of the best things that took place at this years comic con haha. It still makes me laugh. Thank you so much Bab Camp for you time and stories!

Now I do have a number of other stories and events to share with you all. As well as new podcast interviews :). So please come by again and check it out!

Star Trek Book Challenge 42: Bloodletter (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #3)

We have Bloodletter (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #3)…….

The crew of Deep Space Nine must hustle when they learn that the Cardassians are planning to construct a base on the other side of the wormhole.

Nope… This was bad…. Written by K.W. Jeter…. Again like I said in the past posts, they launched the DS9 series WAY to early. Nothing follows the DS9 lore/history… Kinda long and drawn out, this one looks like another “pay check” book.. Just look over this book if you can.. It’ll save you a headache….

Meet & Greet A Pre-Wizard World Event: Interviews James Marsters, Christian Kane & Victor Dandridge

Let the games begin!!

So the other night me and my wife drove up to Portland to get the press pass for Wizard World! Got to meet some of the other media folks and also the guests that came that night. We had James Marsters (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel”), Christian Kane (“The Librarians/Angel”) and Chris 51 (“Epic Ink”). We also had artist Victor Dandridge (Editor-In-Chief – Vantage: Inhouse).

I was lucky to interview James Marsters, Christian Kane and Victor Dandridge the other night!  I can tell you that all three of these guys are super nice and down to earth. When I got there I RSVP to interview James, but there was a gentleman before myself. So while waiting my turn I was asked if I would like to interview Christian Kane! Sure! I felt bad because I was not ready in any form to ask him any questions. I’ve always been a fan and I’ve followed Leverage all the way to the bitter end…. I loved him in Angel. So I knew I could come up with some question on the spot.. But man, I had a fan freak out moment with him haha. Fantastic guy and super funny. Christian if you happen to read this, thank you for putting up with me hahaha! Sadly most of the interviews are all about 6 to 10 minutes long. Once I get everything uploaded and edited for the podcasts I’ll make sure to share the link with all of you.

img_20160219_003426.jpgJames Marsters…  Down to earth, funny and easy to talk to. As I was walking up he looked at me and said,” Oh! It’s you! I remember you!” Starting to laugh I had to look at him and ask, “It’s the mustache isn’t it?”. While laughing he said “yes” hahaha. Whats great tho, that was almost 3 years ago when me and my wife met him. I was rather shocked. At this point we just started talking about family and his kids and my kids. It felt like running in long lost friend and trying to catch up with everything. Then I realized I wasn’t recording any of these, I quickly turned on my recorder and continued along with everything. Great guy. This interview was about 10 minutes long and again like Christian, I’ll get everything uploaded to the podcast.

Mister Victory Dandridge. We were getting ready to leave for the night till Abby (who runs the press and put all this together.) asked if we would like to interview Victor. Sure! Now I haven’t heard of this guy till last night so I went into this interview flying by the seat of my pants. I’m glad Abby said something to me about him. Easy going and super funny. Amazing artiest as well, what I really like about this conversation we had. It was two fans setting down and talking about comics. If you get the chance to see him at Wizard World do so!! His website is
