Getting closer to the end!! This is the last novel for the TNG series!! Personally I could believe my eyes and had to go back and double check all the books haha. A Rock and a Hard Place (Star Trek: The Next Generation #10) by Peter David who also wrote Vendetta, Q-In-Law, Strike Zone, The Rift, The Siege just to name a few. I’ve read a number of his books in this challenge, as well as some of the his comic books. I think the only one so far I didn’t really like was Strike Zone.. But you can read about that in my Star Trek Book Challenge section. Anywho! Back to the novel and the plot line:
Under the best circumstances, terraforming is a tough, dangerous task that pits the hardiest of pioneers against an unforgiving environment. When the terraformers on the planet Paradise fall behind schedule, commander Riker is given temporary leave from the U.S.S. Enterprise and sent to assist.
Riker’s replacement on the Starship Enterprise is a volatile officer named Stone whose behavior soon raises questions about his ability and his judgment. Meanwhile, Commander Riker has become enmeshed in a life and struggle with Paradise’s brutal landscape. However, he soon learns that not all of the planet’s dangers are natural in origin — as he comes face to face with Paradise’s greatest danger and most hideous secret.
I rather enjoyed this book and it was a nice way to wrap things up with TNG novels. There have been some bad one in the past and I was a little worried about this one. Stone was an interesting character to say the least. He was made to be Riker’s replacement, while Riker was went to a terraforma planet. An odd part of Stone’s backstory was he was able to beat the Kobayashi Maru program with out cheating…? It didn’t really go into that much and I would like to know how he did it with out cheating. Plus Stone is a little off his rocker insane.. That’s putting it lightly really. Over all the novel was great and a the characters were spot on! Peter David has and for the most part been writer with a good knowledge of the Star Trek history and characters. Great humor throughout the story and rather intriguing at times. If you happen to find a copy of this book, grab it and read it!!
