Wizard Magazines of The Past

Ment to share this earlier with the with pile of comics I got. But I instead shared on Twitter, and it had an interesting response. As a kid I use to collect Wizard magazine remembering all the artwork and interviews. All the fan art and posters /tradibg cards they came with.

But upon sharing my find, I found out I was not the only one who was still collecting them. It was almost like open the barn door just a little bit and boom! I had an number of people share their stories with me and the issues that they had. I have to say the whole thing has been really cool. Made me realize how much I miss collecting these magazines and comics.

Comics & Childhood Memories Part 2

img_20200609_142130_0236065484735540063323.jpgSo last month I talked about Image Comics and some memories that I had. That can be found here (LINK). Because of that, it caused me to start collecting again and the other day I found a number of comics in this antique mall here in town. I wasn’t going to write about it. But I did make a 4 part post on Twitter about it and for some reason I got on a small soap box.

9c2xhp7192317263766269698.jpgI really didn’t think much of it. Then it hit on much these comic help me change and over come learning issues I had a child. I normally don’t talk about these on here, mostly because it’s never really come up before hahaha. But now reading through these comics, it is clear I had forgotten on how great they were. I think I wrote about this before…

(*Looks over post*)

Yes, yes I did.. But that’s okay… Me and my Dad would have our weekly trip to the comic store and pick up whatever we can get. I remember trying to copy a lot of the art styles screenshot_20200608-201036_twitter2229549943737104980.jpgthat were there by Liefeld, McFarland, Lee. To me the early 90’s were a golden time for comics and art over all. I loved the stories and reading over and over again. Helped me with my Dyslexia (also reading Michael Crichton).

After going through all these comics I just got, I want to go back and dig around some more. I know there is a local comic shop I want to hit as well. Another cool thing was, when I posted these tweets. I got a retweet from Rob Liefeld. It may seem like “small beans” to most, but to me it was a cool little nod/”I saw that”.

20200609_1521398024194944910522224.jpgOn top of that my girlfriend was helping me dig through some of the comics and she found two comics of Buckaroo Banzai! It was a limited two part comic series released by Marvel. Buckaroo Banzai being one of my favorite movies I had to get them. I’m sure I’ll write again soon about some of the finds I have. Also me and my fellow co-hosts on our podcast were talking about doing another Image Comic eps. Seeings how I missed that one.. Ugh.. So I’ll post more updates about that as they come in.

Wizard World 2019: Artists & Retailers

Okay this one is more about the Artists rather than the retailers.. While there is a number of great retailers that come to these events. I feel this year wasn’t that great.. I found a lot of them to be over priced for what they were selling. For example: one retailer would be selling a Pop Head at $40. Now you can go two spaces down and find the same one for $20 or $15…. Plus there seems to be a number of complaining coming from the booths. Stating that no one is buying anything and “trying” to cause guilt trips into buying their stuff.. Personally I found myself think they should have made plans on selling and/or pricing for their products. I really don’t feel bad for them, specially the ones selling autographs of actors or guest for almost double what they are worth. Plus the fact you if you selling autographs of guest who are there at the Comic Con. Why would you buy just pictures for a 100+, when you can get a more personal experience with them and a picture…? It annoys me to no end with these people. I had one guy bitch at me because he put his all his money into this event, in hopes of a profit. This went on for almost 15 awkward minutes. He had nothing but autograph pictures…. No clothing, props, figures.. Just pictures… In the end I just walked away, stating you should have better business sense and know your demographic better. Before wasting all your money on this kinda project.

ANYWHO!! Sorry got on a random soapbox there.

The Artist:

I got to meet Randy Emberlin and wow. Super nice guy and funny. Talked to him for a bit about his art work and past job he had in the past. If you don’t know who Randy is, here is a small bio for you.

Image result for Randy Emberlin

Randy Emberlin is a comic book inker best known for his ink work on the Spider-Man comic books. Per the bio on his website, he currently lives in Portland, Oregon. He has spent the past 30 years working in a variety of creative fields, including as an illustrator of educational books and an animator on over fifty television commercials.

Over the last 20 years he is probably best known for his work as an inker in comics, with a resumé that includes long runs on The Amazing Spider-Man, G.I. Joe, Doctor Strange, Alien Legion, Ghost, and recently the Left Behind series for Tyndale House. He has worked with a wide range of pencilers.

I found myself buying a number of his pictures and getting is autograph as well. Plus the lack of Spider-Man artwork on my walls is rather bothersome haha.

static1.squarespace.comI also got to meet Mostafa Moussa and fell in love with his art style. With out even thinking about it, I got a drawing he did with Deadpool & Cable. As well as one of Harley Quinn. Mostafa has worked with DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, IDW, Dark Horse, Hasbro, Mirage Studios, Zenescope, Devil’s Due, Big Dog Ink, just to name a few. Personally I didn’t realize who he was till I saw his art work and put two and two together haha.

Thor… A Woman Now?

So I was going to jump on the whole female Thor conversion the other day when the news is released from Marvel. It seems like everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and I wanted to read through some of the articles get some other points of view. Also the fact I had a podcast come up/retake for The Incredible Hulk which you guys should check out.

Now I don’t really have a problem with the whole gender swap. I mean did it with Wasp, Captain Marvel, even had a lady Deadpool, Batwoman, Lady Punisher at one point. I know there is a rumor going around that Marvel is going forward with the idea of making Dr Doom a woman. The only problem I have, is you have his character set in stone for decades and it seems like everybody wants to reboot or rehash something that has no problems. If it’s not broken don’t fix it. What I would like to see is for DC, Marvel, Image and Dark Horse to come up with some original characters.

At first when  I  heard about them changing Thor I was a little annoyed, then the other half of me was kind of excited. That’s if they did  it correctly and not make it so she is just going to be in a skimpy chainmail outfit running around with a big hammer. But looking at the pictures of the released, I’m actually excited. That it is an actually a functional costume, like the new outfit for the new Batgirl.

Its all functional there’s a purpose for everything and not just tight spandex or some skimpy outfits. Cuz I been looking around for superheroes that are women so I can show them to my little girl. I  mean you have your staples like: Supergirl, Batgirl, Wonder Woman, it’s just a little hard to find some strong female figures and stuff that she can relate to. Just to show not everything is guy dominated. She recently got into She-Hulk and really loves she her. But I think having Thor as a woman might open a lot more doors specially for the younger girls.

The story plot for Thor  interesting and I’m not sure how well it’s going to translate. Because from my understanding it seems like Thor has lost the ability to control the hammer and or has lost his powers. The female that is taking his place, I guess Thor had saved her at some point. She later becomes obsessed with Thor, and surrounds her life with all things Thor. Somehow she gets the ability to control/wheeled Thor’s power and hammer. If this is true, because the internet is always full of rumors and it’s kind of a crap shoot on what is fact or what is fake.  The story seems kind of a weak., But we won’t know for sure until comes out. But I for one will be picking this up and giving it a chance. I’ll also will definitely show my little girl this comic. I showed her pictures of it the other day and she’s really excited about it.

I think in our next podcast we’ll be bringing this up as a news piece and probably have round table discussion. So I’ll be keeping you updated on that.

So what are your guys’s thoughts on this?

Do you think the comic companies should just come up with whole new characters rather than rebooting the old classic ones?

Leave your thoughts and comments below and we’ll definitely respond to them.
