Star Trek Book Challenge 15: Death Count (Star Trek: The Original Series #62)

So I changed things up and went old school with Star Trek. Take a small break from TNG hahaha.

217584So for this challenge I read Death Count (Star Trek: The Original Series #62) by L.A. Graf. Not to much action in this novel, butwhen it does happen. Look out!. But it does have a smooth story line and the over all book is good. I will say this tho! There is something to be said about taking the focus off of Kirk, Spock and McCoy once in a while. I think that’s why this story worked so well. Because it use crew members that we’re not to use to. With Kirk, Spock and Bones we know all there is to know about them and can predict their reactions. By using Chekov, Uhura, and Sulu, L.A. Graf was able to set the story moving and the reads on edge. Story out line goes as follows:

The disappearance of Andorian scientific genius Muav Haslev fuels tensions between the Orions and Andorians, tensions that come dangerously close to full scale war. Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are called to Starbase Sigma 1, located on the edge of Andorian-Orion space, to patrol the sector as a deterrent to hostilities. On arrival, the crew encounters an inexplicable series of events, beginning with missing equipment and shipboard malfunctions. After a deadly transporter accident, Kirk suspects sabotage, suspicions that are confirmed by the mysterious murders of three Federation officials.

Kirk and crew must put together the fragmented pieces of the puzzle, before the Starship Enterprise faces destruction and the galaxy faces interplanetary war.

In any case its refreshing to take a break from the ‘norm’ and see the adventures from a different perspective especially in this case as so much of the mystery actually revolves around the decisions and actions of these three. Uhura weren’t fleshed out that much on the TV, but sometimes what they said and did just didn’t seem quite right. That said, it had it’s share of a few funny moments and I loved the singing lizards. Spoilers by the way.
This is a good vacation/Doctor’s waiting room/’I’m stuck here for a while’ read.

Star Trek Book Challenge 14: Possession (Star Trek: The Next Generation #40)

Star Trek Book Challenge 14: Possession (Star Trek: The Next Generation #40)

So I kinda kick the book challenge a little this week. Normally I make a post once a week about this. But I happen to knock out a few of them rather quickly and I figured while they are still fresh in my mind I’d post them. 🙂 That and I want to see if I can finish all of these books before the year ends…. But I don’t that will happen, it’s worth a shot tho!!

217502SO! Possession (Star Trek: The Next Generation #40)…. Yeah! BY J.M. Dillard & Kathleen O’Malley. Okay let me say this. When you find yourself reading a “team up” novel, it never really turns out well. Specially in the Star Trek universe and SPECIALLY when it’s two writers you have never heard of.. I thought about skipping this book and putting ti off till the end.

Eighty years ago, bodiless entities brought a plague of violence and bloodshed to the planet Vulcan. The nightmare ended only when the entities were trapped inside special containers. Now, on the eve of a galaxy-scale scientific exposition, the containers have been opened, freeing the malevolent entities to possess the minds and bodies of all they encounter, including the crew of the “Starship Enterprise”(TM) . Friends turn into foes, and no one can be trusted as Captain Picard faces a deadly and insidious threat. Unless the entities can be stopped once more, they will spread their madness throughout the entire federation.

But I’m glad I didn’t. The over all story was good and it deals with a foreign invader that the sensors cannot detect. But is does have some mistakes in it (I think it’s just how Star Trek rolls.. Seems like every book has the same problem.) Having said that, it was still a great book, it does reminded me a few different episodes of TNG where similar events occurred. The authors did a great job at capturing the characters likeness. I would have liked to see a better closure to Worf’s new friend.

So in the end I recommend this book to any Trekkie out there.

Star Trek Book Challenge 13: Balance of Power (Star Trek: The Next Generation #33)

216895Balance of Power (Star Trek: The Next Generation #33) by Dafydd ab Hugh….  I’m not to sure if I really like this one. I mean it was a good story. But disappointing. Lackluster…  Although it contains much humor, and captures most of the TNG crew very well. It does a number of key elements like the Ferengi pirate plot, which I found to be rather underwhelming. Also Wesley Crusher! Apart from a few stabs at what he would become by the end of the series.

When a famous Federation scientist dies, his son puts his inventions up for sale to the highest bidder, be they Federation, Klingon, Romulan, or Cardassian. Among the items at auction is a photon pulse canon capable of punching through a starship’s shields with a single shot. Meanwhile, Wesley Crusher is kidnapped from the Academy by renegade Ferengi who have set their sights on the photon canon as well, and Captain Picard must outmaneuver enemies on every side to save Wesley and protect the Enterprise from the deadly fire of the new canon.

Dafydd ab Hugh has Wesley all wrong. Wesley was never the wanna-be-swot he appears to be in this novel. He was all-Starfleet-wunderkid… Then he was completely disillusioned. He wasn’t the crafty, shifty, highly-strung cadet I read about in this novel. The whole story was just there… Didn’t give an history, build on any crew from TNG. Didn’t even try to introduces a new element. It was a filler novel.. So someone did it for the money..

I say skip this book. There are some many other ones out there and FAR, FAR better.

Books And Podcast

2015-11-15 12.09.05So with end of the year coming around rather soon. I’ve kinda stepped up the Star Trek book Challenge from once a week to at least 3 times a week. Reason being, just to take a big chuck out before 2016. So far there is been a few winners in series. But there are some poorly written novels through out this whole thing.. That is way it’s been a challenge, there have been a few times where I just wanted to put the book down and walk away. Or at least start up a new one and up the other one off for a bit. I’ll see what I’m talking about as the posts come around. So I have around 20 of the 88 Star Trek novels done. You can check out what I have posted here (https://nerdylifeofmine.com/category/star-trek-book-challenge/). There is a REAL dog of a book coming up, that just blow my mind. It was so bad!! I couldn’t believe it was written by one of my favorite authors. I kept thinking that this wasn’t the same person, this can’t be the same person. Nope… It was.. Must have been a “pay check” book.. That’s all I can come up with really as to why this book was down right rotten. ANYWHO!!

Now for Podcasting! We missed October do to some time traveling mathematical issues. We are currently working quickly to fix this and hope get everyone back! Please check out our show at (http://eclecticmayhem.libsyn.com/). I’m also working on a the long awaited TableTop EPS. Was trying to do one part with the normal EM Crew and one with some close friends. I’ll post some updates as it’s going closer.
